Adam King
Adam King STATEMENT My collages recycle and transform references from history and contemporary culture to explore and reflect on themes including masculine identity and consumerism. The work often utilizes a Sci-fi inspired lens to invest imagery with a retro-futuristic quality. Combining wrestlers, models, and Greek sculpture with outmoded technology, hybrids pose in subtly subversive scenarios. In an earlier series, objects photographed in charity shops become possible architectural structures through edge-of-dystopian landscapes. Source material is cut up and layered using software, printed out, and glued on paper, the edges of compositions contoured with a scalpel. By manipulating the scale of cut-outs and playing with angles and positioning, the landscapes are organized through classical space. In these vistas of fantasy worlds, fragments of upturned glassware may suggest towers or fortresses whilst a male model with a computer screen for a head returns our gaze with a film star eye. BIO King’s multimedia practice aims to explore themes of identity and value. He often utilizes a Sci-fi-inspired lens through which to transform contemporary cultural and historical references and reflect on the current moment. His work has been included in numerous projects and exhibitions in Private and Public galleries and at International art fairs. Recent projects include: Photosynthesis magazine Issue 3: Capitalism, Whatever happened to Alexander?, OUTPOST studios project space, Norwich (solo show), and an Online artist talk given as part of the Photopocene podcast series ARTIST CONTACT IMAGES |
