STATEMENT

Collage, for me, is a way of working and a way of seeing. My background as a creative director and designer taught me how to control meaning. My art, though, allows me to let go of the narrative. I don’t aim for clarity. I’m drawn to the tension between communication and erasure—between the message that was once there and the new expression pushing through. What’s visible matters. But often, what isn’t seen matters just as much. Often, the power is in the missing.

I tear posters from construction hoardings and city walls—ads meant to be seen and that will be forgotten. Once removed, they become something else: torn layers, broken letterforms, partial images. These fragments weren’t designed to be art, but they carry a history of intention. I collect, edit, and layer them—not to preserve what they were, but to discover what they might become.

The process is intuitive. Pieces fall to the studio floor, and sometimes that’s where the composition begins. A shape, a torn edge, or a slash of color might call something into place. There’s instinct and chance in the way I work, but also deliberation. Each layer, each juxtaposition, invites reinterpretation—not resolution.

My work is an invitation to you, the viewer. Nothing is fully told. Each piece leaves space for curiosity, memory, and response. Meaning isn’t delivered—it’s assembled, suggested, teased. It’s up to you to complete the fragments.

Allen Ford is a collage artist in Montreal, Canada, where he works as a creative director and designer. Allen has participated in shows in Montreal, Toronto, and Ottawa.
