STATEMENT

A unification of familiar human and inhuman images to make something that should be unfamiliar only to bend the sensory journey of the observer back though a surreal cohesiveness into an illusion of familiar like an emotional hallucination from another world hiding in the crevices of the subconscious.

BIO

Cash Mattock is an artist and musician from Rochester, New York. At an early age, Cash was interested in all forms of art. He used art as a tool to help him deal with the emotional challenges of having difficult childhood. This turned into an obsession. By the time Cash reached his preteens, he was a self-taught multi-instrumentalist and illustrator.

Cash’s parents had a bitter divorce when he was a teenager. This made his high school years very challenging, but he was still awarded a scholarship to attend the Rochester Institute of Technology. He wanted to peruse his love for graphic design, but he was pushed by his family to enroll in the mechanical engineering program which only lasted for two years. During the summer of his second year he auditioned and was accepted into the music performance program at Nazareth College. He started touring with a few bands which eventually led to him withdrawing from Nazareth after two years.

The combination of being on the road, struggling with his music career and still holding on to childhood issues became too much for Cash to handle. He developed a drug addiction which added to his depression. A suicide attempt put him into a coma, but he survived. After his recovery he developed a completely new perspective and appreciation for life.

Cash released his debut solo album about his experiences and launched his record label in 2004. He worked on some of the album cover designs for his label, but is contributions were limited. Cash created an art blog which eventually gave him the confidence to create his own artwork again. He fell in love with collage and double exposure photography. He was especially drawn to the work of Jerry Uelsmann and Antonio Mora.

Cash’s first digital collages were surreal scenes created by using only two photos. His signature portraits that he now creates are still as simplistic but are far more developed than his earlier work. Cash likes making portraits because he feels that it gives his work a human identity which draws an immediate connection to the observer. He is able to blend his collage in a cohesive way both in color and texture which adds to the surrealism.

Cash’s art empowers him. Every time he creates a piece it’s like he’s solving a problem. It’s a healthy reminder that we can always find solutions even in places where it seems like there is none.

Cash Mattock usually always works with photos, but he created a series using vintage lithographs for a book he’s currently writing about his theory of everything, which he hopes will help other people see the world in a different way.
