STATEMENT

Heather Good was born and raised in Ontario, Canada and graduated as an Honours Associate from the Ontario College of Art & Design in Toronto. She has since continued her studies in Florence, Italy, and had her work exhibited on both the Canadian and international stage. Heather now works and lives in Nelson, British Columbia.

To be immersed in Heather’s work is to experience the natural world at a visceral, almost preconscious, level. Each painting forms a snapshot into the shadowy world of our own cognitive landscape. Through her collage work, Heather fuses a farrago of textures and media, acrylic, watercolor, pastels, paper, ink, charcoal, graphite and copper, into diaphanous layers that echo a dream-like state, with intense detail superimposed upon transient landscapes.

She paints by instinct, percolating her perception of nature through a filter of the unconscious mind to produce ephemeral works bounding in color and texture. Working in a serial fashion, often with several works in progress simultaneously, Heather paints automatically. She relents to the impulses of her imagination, spiriting from canvas to canvas to create a narrative thread that strips away our contextual anchors and binds each painting in an unspoken, almost accidental, thematic framework.

For Heather, painting is the eternal journey whereby she measures the relationship between herself and the natural world. Objects, flora, elements, words, the shifting seasons: these familiar subjects and processes serve as her transient yet consistent touchstones. Inspired by this eternally shifting bouquet of colors, textures and shapes, Heather keeps the borrowed memories of locales and her current surroundings alive through the process of creating art.
