STATEMENT

Collage is, for me, the perfect way to integrate my creative interests: art quilting, photography, print-making, and painting. I am intrigued by texture. I am also nostalgic and try to bring elements of that into my work, whether it is with vintage lace patterns echoed in my hand-cut stamps or symbolism gleaned from memories that may not be readily apparent to lookers-on. Art-making is personal to me and that intimacy is reflected by the smaller sizes of my canvases. There are faster ways to work, but I find that hand-stamping the paper I will use on a canvas, and then cutting out the individual pieces for gluing, is an important part of the whole art-making experience. I value the hand made imperfections and the meditative, sometimes frustrating, decision-making process that comes with handling painted paper that is less than ideal. I know I have accomplished something wonderful when I can step back from a collage and find that those bits and pieces of individually torn, cut, or blemished papers have been transformed into something new and beautiful.
