STATEMENT

I always enjoyed the decorative aspect of collage, playing optical illusions, tricks on the viewer, where is one left wondering.

In the majority of my work, I use paper, found objects and paint. My inspiration often comes from my training as a fashion designer. I am always looking for “something with a little punch, that arouses curiosity or starts a conversation, like a guilty pleasure.

Provocative items, like stiletto heels, strands of pearls, sexy undergarments, or sometimes the memory of a popular song, become an idea for a painting. I am marrying fashion and art, using original vintage images, cut outs from modern fashion magazines and paint to create “collage paintings”.

All my work is handmade and I believe that investing time and emotion in making individual pieces is almost a nostalgic notion, that may be overlooked with the ever pressing technological advancement at our disposal.

BIO

I was born in Minsk, Belarus.

After high school, I went to study in the small town of Vitebsk. When I found out that Mark Chagall was born and had worked there, I realized that the surroundings did not create the artist. An artist has to recreate the world around her by seeing the beauty and uniqueness that may otherwise be hidden in the mediocrity around her.

After receiving a Masters in Fashion Design, I worked as a leading Fashion Designer at the renowned Fashion Centre in Minsk for almost a decade. While at the Centre, I also was running a monthly spread in a local fashion magazine and created stage costumes for music performers and singers. In 1990, following the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown, I left for Canada, where I currently reside with my family. Today, I am a Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist working in a variety of traditional and mixed mediums, including oil, acrylic paint, handmade collage, and illustration. I am an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists (SCA). I exhibit my work in Toronto and abroad and my artwork has found its home in Canada, USA and Europe.
