STATEMENT

I am irresistibly drawn to beauty and appalled by excess. This dichotomy complicates my need to create versus adding to the planet. Although I am multi-disciplinary, my frequent choice of collage gives me a sense of “saving” instead of “spending.” I use the layering of cut paper, paint, etc., to reflect the push-pull I feel towards the guilt and ecstasy of existence. For me, the United States’ wealth and excessive use of world resources are appalling and magnetic at the same time.

I love color and light, color through light, nature and light! I strive to express the deep emotional connection I have with color.

BIO

California-based artist Marina Poropat Joyce was born in Brazil to a Brazilian mother and Italian/Croatian father. Raised in California, her cross-cultural upbringing is at home in the myriad cultures of SoCal. She founded an award-winning design-to-print company in her twenties and, after selling that company, authored a college textbook on graphic design for print and then moved on to her first love: making art.

Marina paints, collages, and also hand weaves out of her studio in Santa Ana, California. Nature is her number one inspiration and the environment her number one concern. After two decades in a male-dominated industry as a business owner, Marina seeks to resolve her very traditional upbringing with the role she lived as mother and breadwinner to her three children.
