Patricia Srigley
Patricia Srigley STATEMENT I work mainly with bits and pieces harvested from magazine pages. I make detailed, surreal images, often building a picture from themed objects, such as watches or shoes or purses. I recreate. In my art, a shoelace will rarely serve its original purpose. A shoelace might be a strand of hair, or a strange pale snake, or a sprig of grass. A zipper might be a mouth. The viewer must draw close to identify the fragments of objects that have been used to create something very different. I sometimes employ wordplay: a horse made entirely from bits and pieces of shoes becomes an artwork entitled Horseshoe. There are often hidden little messages and secret objects to be found in my art, if the viewer spends time studying it, or has a keen eye. My favourite textures and colours are metallics, golds and silvers. My collages are often large, approximately 24 x 36 inches. I work on illustration board or very thick watercolour paper. I use acrylic medium as my paste, or untinted acrylic binder. Some of my collages are all about colour, highlighting all the colours of the colour wheel within interesting patterns. My process is labour intensive. I require a whole room to lay out my palette of themes, objects, textures, colours, patterns and even text. I once spent almost four months, fulltime, on one collage. For me, collage inspires my creativity in a way that paint does not. BIO Patricia Srigley is an artist and author from Montreal, Quebec. Her main interests are collage and writing.
