STATEMENT

I work across photography, collage, and text to recover the lives of women the historical record left out, overlooked, or misremembered. My ongoing series, “Retrieval,” treats this recovery not as reconstruction but as an act of attention—an attempt to give form to women whose stories survive only in fragments, margins, and silences.

That attention begins in specific places with their own histories: sites I return to repeatedly, observing how landscape holds trace and memory over time. This carries into the studio, where it meets a disciplined archival practice. I source historical photographs and materials directly, researching their provenance and cultural context before they enter my work, and I document that research as part of the piece itself.

Writing is inseparable from this process. Alongside my visual work, I write fiction, poetry, and short prose that often develops in tandem with a series—sometimes debuting alongside the collage or photographic piece it grew from. Text and image inform each other throughout, so that a single project moves fluidly between forms: a photograph prompts a story, a story reshapes a collage, an archival fragment becomes both.

The result is work that sits deliberately between evidence and imagination—precise about its sources, while making room for intimacy and longing in the gaps that scholarship alone cannot fill. I’m interested in what it means to remember someone accurately and tenderly at once, and in making space, visually and narratively, for women whose full stories were never recorded to begin with.

Robin Rivers is a Vancouver, Canada-based artist working in photography and collage. Her practice is rooted in the recovery of women the historical record left out, overlooked, or misremembered—treating that recovery not as reconstruction but as an act of sustained attention. Her ongoing series, “Retrieval,” draws on her original photography and museum open-access archives whose provenance and cultural context she researches and documents as integral to each work.

Rivers grounds her process in specific landscapes she returns to repeatedly to photograph, observing how place holds trace and memory over time. Her work has been exhibited across North America and internationally. She has held artist residencies in France, and her work has been featured in Photo Trouvée Magazine. Her upcoming solo exhibition, “Misrememberings: Fragments of Longing and Love,” curated by NorthVan Arts, opens October 22, 2026, at the District of North Vancouver Foyer Gallery.
