STATEMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flanzella was born and raised in Toronto and now resides in Dallas, Texas. She studied at McMaster University for Multimedia & Communications with a focus in Studio Art. This program gave her a foundation in graphic design that is apparent in her artwork. After graduating, she reverted back to paper over digital artworks, enticed by the inability to push \u201cCTL+Z\u201d when making a mistake. She is fascinated by the production of mass media and publishing, so it was an instant attraction for her to become a collage artist. It was not until 2019 when she discovered vintage publications that her artwork was elevated to what it is today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BIO<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flanzella is a Canadian-born artist known for her vintage-inspired handmade collages cut from magazines dating from the 1920s to 1990s. With the help of her cutting tools, vintage magazines, and adhesive, she creates visually captivating works that critique social norms and\/or the status quo. Flanzella enjoys including humour in her artwork and loves to get people talking. She describes her artistic process as \u201corganized chaos\u201d. Using intuition and analysis, “piles of potential” start to form on the desk. These piles have complimenting colours that juxtapose the original meaning. Carefully the pieces are cut out, arranged, and glued together. Magazines in this era are chocked full of misogynistic, unrealistic, expectations making them perfect for humour and criticism. By bringing history to modern art, the conversation of equality can continue to be discussed. Yes, we’ve come a long way as a society, but there is so much left to be done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
