STATEMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n

Px\u00a9\u2019s images pause at the nexus of art and commerce, where the two\u00a0battle for the heart and mind of the viewer. As pop art, Px\u00a9 references\u00a0advertising that shapes our lives and view of the world, but when\u00a0confronted with his art, his pop morphs into catastrophic violence: when\u00a0things break open, beauty spills like blood from a wound.<\/p>\n

Px\u00a9 is the corporate alter-ego of Montreal artist Benoit Depelteau. It first\u00a0appeared in the 1999 painting You never know when you\u2019ll need Px\u00a9<\/em>, as\u00a0a car parts brand name. Px\u00a9 has been known, over the years, to mimic\u00a0advertising strategies to sell dysfunctional products and ideas to people.\u00a0Its catalogue includes car parts, eyes, fingers, tongues, sunglasses, do-it-yourself art, concepts for gallery art, mouse traps, packages and some\u00a0collages and prints. By presenting himself as the corporate entity, Px\u00a9,\u00a0Depelteau makes a cultural statement about the dominance of commercial\u00a0culture in everyday life. His work is a hybrid of American and British Pop Art.<\/p>\n

Benoit Depelteau was born in Montreal and has a Diploma in plastic arts from the Coll\u00e8ge \u00c9douard-Montpetit in Longueuil, Quebec and a Bachelor of Visual Art from the Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al. He lives and works in Montreal. He also the editor of Kolaj Magazine<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n
