STATEMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n

My work is a process that allows me to play with materials in both analog and digital formats. I cut and scan images to create compositions that may be created on or off the computer (or somewhere in between). The imagery I use is from the turn of the 20th century through the 1950’s. I like the idea of manipulating form and taking images out of their original context and recreating new scenes and narratives. Since I am a graphic designer I find that letterforms also offer an interesting alternative to image-making. I especially admire typefaces that were used for advertising during the Victorian time period through the mid 20th century.<\/p>\n

BIO<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nancy Bernardo lives in Rochester, New York and is an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Rochester Institute of Technology. She has been a practicing graphic designer for 16 years, is a self-professed type nerd, and collects ephemera from the Victorian time period through the mid-twentieth century. She has an undergraduate degree in English from Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Indiana and a MFA in Visual Communications from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has been published as book covers, shown in galleries in New Orleans, Chicago, New York City, and Seattle. In September of 2012 her book cover design for Checking In\/Checking Out<\/em> was selected as one of the best 50 covers of 2011 by Design Observer and AIGA.<\/p>\n
