Iris Sigmundsdottir
Reykjavik, Iceland

STATEMENT

Since I was a teenager, I have been cutting and pasting, making collages. One thing has led to another to put my works on the path that they are on today, but this particular style just started to evolve less then a year ago. My work is changing everyday, so I am quickly moving forward with my art style. I graduated as a graphic designer, Spring 2011, from the Akureyri School of Visual Arts. My works are all handmade and I stay away from computers and technology as much as possible.

I am fascinated with the woman, her mind and body. The concept for most of my works is the endless battle that often happens between the two. It’s about body image, self-respect and loathing. How everything looks good on the outside, when there is chaos on the inside. In my quest to produce my works, I try to understand and open my eyes to the fact that we are all unique, but most of us have in common the fact that we are all dealing with the same dilemmas.

I use heavy watercolour paper as the base for most of the works. In some, I use different kinds of paper, like used printing paper to get that used feeling and get a relationship between that and the atmosphere in the artwork. I make collages, but some might call it mixed media. I make drawings with pen and pencils, I add gouache and I cut and paste.

BIO

EDUCATION
2008-2011 – Graphic Design
Akureyri School of Visual Arts – Iceland
2007 – Foundation course in arts
Akureyri School of Visual Arts – Iceland
Member of FIT since 2009

EXHIBITIONS
2012 – Det Rode Pakhus, Hobro – Denmark
Group exhibition.
2012 – DesignMarch, Reykjavik – Iceland
Komplex.
