ARTIST STATEMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n

“La Llorona”: These 5 pieces belong to my exhibition work, “La Llorona” (2016), in collaboration with the photographer Ismael Rosales. It’s a series of 10 handmade collage-portraits about Mexican women.<\/p>\n

BIO<\/strong><\/p>\n

“<\/strong>I have dedicated many years to working with this technique. I\u2019m currently working manually: I like to work with scissors, glue, and the exploration of various materials. At the moment I’m working in small, medium and large format, but always applying handmade collage techniques. I like to combine thumbnails and large pieces in the same space, thereby creating a universe of ‘flying’ figures out of paper and cardboard. I often work with silhouetted figures mounted on foam and wood, which seem as if they were ‘floating’ next to the wall, projecting a small shadow, and creating an effect of lightness and volatility.<\/p>\n

The female figure is largely the central focus of my work. I also work on the idea of generic diversity and sexual ambiguity, always with surrealistic language, and allowing total freedom of interpretation to the observer: The observer\u2019s interpretation always seems the most interesting to me. Depending on who and how the pieces are looked upon, it can be very different to the author’s, which is always unilateral and is simply the starting point of the work.”<\/p>\n

Since 2011, Rebeka Elizegi has been in solo and group shows in Madrid, Berlin, Barcelona, and San Sebastian. In 2015, her work in “The Opposite Sex” at Linus Art Galleries in Los Angeles was selected as “Juried Exhibition Winner”.<\/p>\n
