STATEMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n

Excavating and reinterpreting language, memory, colonialism, sex\/sexuality, folklore and Obeah from my personal experiences real and imagined via my\u00a0\u201cRas-Pan-Afro-Homo-Sapien\u201d\u00a0<\/span>construct. Most of my work incorporates activism and a certain self referential aspect. Thus the work seeks to employ itself as a palliative gesture and dispels the trauma and shame people of color and gay people have been routinely subjected to.<\/p>\n

BIO<\/strong><\/p>\n

Born and raised in Jamaica, Lawrence Brown was self educated and now lives and works in New York and New Jersey. His work has been presented at The Queens Museum of Art; El Museo del Barrio; Leslie Lohman Gay and Lesbian Museum; Institute of Jamaica, Museum of Ethnography; The National Gallery of Jamaica; Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance; Aljira Center for Contemporary Art; \u00a0Galleria Homero Massena, Victoria, Brazil; Galerie Lutz Rohs, Duren, Germany; New York University, Grey Gallery; Creative Art Center, University of The West Indies, Jamaica; and the streets of New York City, among other places. He was one of thirty artists to represent USA in the 2008 Shanghai Biennial in China;\u00a0<\/span>His work appeared in several print publications including\u00a0The New York Times<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Hartford Couran<\/em>t.\u00a0Lawrence has been the recipient of the Juror’s Award and Prize at NYU Small Works International Exhibition and is currently a Franklin Furnace Fellow for Avant-Garde performance art for 2011-2012.<\/p>\n
