STATEMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n

“The Universe is made of stories, not of atoms.” – Muriel Rukeyser<\/p>\n

As a little girl, I would look over my families old books and read the stories that my grandfather wrote in the margins. As the paper crumbled, the stories stayed with me.<\/p>\n

When I was 17, I found myself at an Antique Postcard and Paper Exhibition and fell in love immediately with vintage ephemera. I bought two postcards thinking that it would be a nice thing to collect. After 25 years, I found myself with a studio of papers and stories that simply wanted to be shared. And so, 8 years ago, I decided to play with the paper.<\/p>\n

I now create one-of-a-kind collages using only original papers from the 1860s to the 1940s. I approach my work as sort of an improvisation of paper and glue. Sitting down with no final image in mind, I use the papers as a guide. Each image juxtaposed with another to create a final cohesive image.<\/p>\n

BIO<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lisa Pijuan-Nomura is a Hamilton-based multidisciplinary artist who works with paper, paint and glue. Inspired by her 20-year-old collection of books and postcards, she began a practice of a daily collage in 2007. At first, she was not very good, but after a few years, she was asked to have a solo exhibit at a Toronto gallery. Since then, she has had two solo exhibits of her shows, “The Artist Is In” and “Evidence of a Paper Addiction”. Lisa has also been a part of many group exhibits in Hamilton and Toronto.<\/p>\n

Lisa is also a storyteller and creates one woman shows combining stories, dance and visual art. In 2014, she was awarded the Hamilton Arts Award for Performance.<\/p>\n

She is pleased to be part of Cobalt Connects Community Supported Art Project for the 2014 holiday season.<\/p>\n

Lisa is currently working on a book combining her love of stories and collage entitled Scissor Stories<\/em>.<\/p>\n
