STATEMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The images in my collages align and reflect upon each other with exact precision to showcase symbolic images and illustrate metaphors, comedic episodes, and stories of light and darkness. I\u2019m in a constant search for images through serendipitous discoveries in my waking life, like a treasure hunter of forgotten things that each tell their own story. My collages often reference movies, news, and cultural events, but my satirical interpretation is not specifically obvious in my collages because I want my audience to question what they see. The materials are simple: paper, Uhu glue, X-acto knives, carving tools, and woodblocks. These types of materials are easy to access and have very few toxic elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I bring my art to the world by exhibiting in small shows worldwide and attending residencies. My goal is to teach something new about different cultures and what it\u2019s like to be an immigrant in America today. The visually intriguing artworks I create are my tool for helping people understand the history of the different cultures we all come from and how our pasts shape the development of humanity into the present and future, especially as indigenous cultures and languages are erased if they do not fit the colonial needs of the new occupiers of those taken lands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BIO<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My name is Inas Al-soqi. I\u2019m a perpetually foreign storyteller immersed in conversation about identity. I use unique books, vintage magazines, and diverse printed paper to compose collages. I also practice printmaking and painting. The subject matter in my artwork plays with the dichotomy between the sanctioned and the unsanctioned, and that of folk and fine art. My artwork delivers an endearing form of satire that expresses an ironic interpretation of class and nobility. The composition of my work addresses the themes of the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Arab cultures, early colonial federalism, and violence against women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
