STATEMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n

My work is the representation of a fictional construct of an unnatural world. My compositions aim to bridge figuration and abstraction in order to make visible the instability of the world of essences. My approach to collage is to present a meeting point of conflicts: digital manipulation and painterly blending; cut-up image and the painted subject; voids and presences. Each work attempts to expand upon these contradictions in the process of creating illusions that both falter and persist.<\/p>\n

BIO<\/strong><\/p>\n

Martin Golland’s work presents a meeting point of conflicts in painting: digital manipulation and paint materiality; the cut-up image and the painted subject. The compositions aim to break down our boundaries between figuration and abstraction.<\/p>\n

Born in Montpellier, France, Martin Golland lived in Turkey, Puerto Rico, Miami, and Toronto before moving to Ottawa. He received his MFA from the University of Guelph (2006) and his BFA from Concordia University (1998). He has exhibited nationally and internationally, including \u201cHuman Nature\u201d at the Carleton University Art Gallery, \u201cImaging Disaster\u201d at Museum London (Ontario) (2013), \u201cThe Archivist\u2019s Etag\u00e8re\u201d at Birch Contemporary in Toronto (2012), and \u201cDark Town\u201d at Felix Ringel Galerie, D\u00fcsseldorf (2007). Golland received an Honourable Mention at the 11th Annual RBC painting competition, which was exhibited in various museums and galleries across Canada. He is an associate professor in painting at the University of Ottawa.<\/p>\n
