STATEMENT & BIO<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leah Dockrill says about her work and herself:<\/em>
My academic education includes degrees in education, library science and law. In addition I have developed a thirty-year art practice of painting, collage and digital art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If I were asked about my inspiration at the root of my collage-making, I would attribute it to the late Canadian artist, Jack Shadbolt\u2019s collage practice as reflected in his book, Act of Art<\/em> (McClelland and Stewart, 1981). His bizarre collages were not my “cup of tea\u201d exactly, but I could easily relate to his sentiments, \u201c…with each mounting phase implications blaze…” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each of the art mediums I\nhave explored has its unique process, and generates different emotions. With\ncollage, the process is all about the anticipation. Where are these pieces of\npaper going to take me next? So many possibilities.  I liken my collage practice to my childhood\nlove of paper dolls. So many hours were spent directing the lives of those\npaper people. As I create collages I am in the grip of something equally as\nfascinating as my paper doll universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have exhibited my work in Canada and the U.S. In the past couple of years I have had two solo exhibitions of collages in Toronto. I have won numerous awards, including both the Gold Artist Award in August 2018 and the Bronze Artist Award in April 2019 from ArtAscent: Art & Literature Journal<\/em>. In recent months, several art and literature reviews have published my work, both collage and painting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have been an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists since 2000. I live in Toronto with my husband and two extraordinary Siberian Neva Masquerade Cats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
