STATEMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I refer to my work as collage painting because it is the interaction of the two that interests me. I often use clothing patterns for their color and graphics. Their color is like parchment. It looks aged. The graphics are lines, arrows and words, which I use in the composition. Other collage materials include music sheets, napkins, handmade papers and printed images. To these I add bright, abstract applications of paint and crayon, making marks with deliberate spontaneity. A dialogue exists between the vivid colors and the parchment background as it would between old and new; between the linear collage elements and the fluidity of the paint. The process is a layering of paint and collage, until the energy is palpable. The work creates a moment when past and present converge. This interaction of time and texture create a story neither one could tell on its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BIO<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2018, Shari Epstein\u2019s “Rising Series” was published in Lunchticket, the literary and art journal from Antioch University MFA program. This series of elongated seascapes address the effects of climate change. Also that year, she had a solo exhibit of her series “Patterns”, abstract collage paintings using clothing patterns. In 2019, she participated in “Collage” at Site:Brooklyn, New York. Shari holds a BA from the University of Maryland. She also studied at the Maryland Art Institute, the Vermont Studio Center and the New York Studio School. Shari Epstein resides in Long Branch, New Jersey.
