STATEMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My current work explores the myth and folly of Hollywood male leads. Stereotypical representations of desire and romance are a curiosity for me. Images of Clark Gable and Rock Hudson pulling their \u201cwoman\u201d close and planting a big kiss on the lips are met with my X-acto knife\u2026I am literally rescuing the female forms from years of hiding behind a veiled lens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An aging population of women who were fed these fantasies are now seeing that American Movie Channel and the media moguls who have controlled what and how we view \u201cromance\u201d or \u201clove\u201d has finally become a call to arms for a new generation of wise women. We are pulling the curtain back to reveal a wider point of view: one that dispels the myth that learning about love through soap operas and Hollywood romance movies is a lot like learning about \u201cArt\u201d from an out-of-date, poorly reproduced art history book. Our numbers are expanding and our voices are heard, from sea to shining sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BIO<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrea Borsuk is a painter and mixed media artist living in Santa Cruz, California. Her recent work explores notions of time and history, gender and fate. She received an MFA from Columbia University and a BA from UC Santa Cruz. She is an Art Instructor at Cabrillo College, in Aptos, California. She was a recipient of the Rydell Visual Arts Fellowship in Santa Cruz County. Her solo and group exhibition venues include: NUMU New Museum of Los Gatos, The Riverside Museum of Art, The Nevada Museum of Art, The Whatcom Museum in Bellingham, Washington, Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History, San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, The Sanchez Art Center in Pacifica, California and the Berkeley Art Center. Her work is in numerous private collections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
