STATEMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fortune and the Feminine<\/p>\n

In this series, my focus is on gender polarities as depicted in popular magazines of the 1950\u2019s and early 1960\u2019s Fortune<\/em> magazine depicted (and still does) men\u2019s world of wealth, industry and big ideas. Its advertisements were awash with imagery of invention and executives\u2019 glamour. Women\u2019s magazines centred on the home with all its flowing fabrics, sensuality and a dreamy interiority.<\/p>\n

My intention is to deconstruct these images of mid-century advertising, creating narratives of ambiguity with humour and a dark edge. The collages are created digitally. The images in this series play with the convergence of interior and exterior domains, abstract ideas and the mystery of the female form.<\/p>\n

This series is an homage both to the handsome men in Fortune<\/em> who look like all the fathers I watched in their big suits and briefcases, carpooling to a foreign land; and to the community of mothers who served egg salad sandwiches on the green lawns of suburbia.<\/p>\n

BIO<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nadine Boughton\u2019s collages use imagery from vintage magazines of the 1950\u2019s to explore the psychology, politics and polarities of mid-century America.<\/p>\n

Boughton was selected for the Photolucida\u2019s Critical Mass Top 50 Award in 2011, 2013 and 2014. Her work has been exhibited widely, including United Photo Industries Gallery, Brooklyn, New York; Davis Orton Gallery, Hudson, New York; JoAnne Artman Gallery, Laguna Beach, California; Griffin Museum of Photography, Boston, Massachusetts; and GuatePhoto in Guatemala. She was an IRIS lecturer at The Annenberg Space for Photography, Los Angeles, California. Nadine\u2019s work is represented by Trident Gallery, Gloucester, Massachusetts.<\/p>\n

Boughton grew up in Rochester, New York, under the shadow of George Eastman\u2019s Kodak Tower. She studied photography with Garry Winogrand, and at Visual Studies Workshop, Rochester, New York, and Lesley University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. She currently lives in Gloucester, Massachusetts.<\/p>\n
