Mirror Mirrored: An Artists’ Edition of 25 Grimms’ Tales

by Corwin Levi and Michelle Aldredge

Grimms’ fairy tales, originally collected in 1812, are a timeless chronicle of the possibilities our lives all have, and the full range of human nature. The stories remain just as relevant today as when they were first published over 200 years ago. Mirror Mirrored: An Artists’ Edition of 25 Grimms’ Tales includes almost 2,000 vintage Grimms’ illustrations remixed into the book alongside the story texts, and work from 28 contemporary artists visually reimagining these stories.

There are thousands of historical Grimms’ illustrators ranging from a third Grimm brother to Gustaf Tenggren who later became a principal designer for Walt Disney’s Snow White, to Maurice Sendak. For Mirror Mirrored, co-author Corwin Levi combed through this rich visual history and remixed almost 2,000 Golden Age pictures from 243 sources into new wonder tale collages. These collages transform these timeless stories into a visual wonderland. Levi scoured New England bookstores, online auctions, and stacks from libraries like Dartmouth College for these old pictures. He then spent three years weaving these images together and throughout the book as new artworks he call “repicts”—collages that accompany the same Grimms’ stories as the original illustrations.
