Modern Vintage Illustration
by Martin Dawber, with introduction by Stephen Bayley
A survey of modern illustration that uses older styles of artistic expression to evoke a sense of another time and place, Modern Vintage Illustration is organized into 12 chapters by historical or cultural period, with hundreds of the best examples of modern retro illustration in styles as varied as Constructivism, Dada and Art Nouveau. These vintage-style illustrations play with the past, subvert it on occasion, but always feel fresh.
Benoit Depelteau reviewed the book in Kolaj #3.
Depelteau wrote in his review:
“Across the pages, that body of work defines itself in a variety of techniques. The interesting aspect of Dawber’s selection is the large place given to traditional work, in a time when digital image processing is the standard. While movements like Art Nouveau, Vienna Secessionism, Constructivism and Art Deco have mostly inspired paintings or screen prints, movements like Victoriana, Dada, Surrealism, 50s Americana, Pop Art, Comic Book Art and Punk prove to be a premium inspiration for collage artists.”
