Where Quirky Meets Menacing
by Kim Smith
Subtitled “an autobiography in collage”, Kim Smith’s Where Quirky Meets Menacing is a collection of more than three dozen collages—-short memoirs typed and carefully placed around delicate vintage prints. The resulting graphic memoirs are whimsical, charming, and evocative, and the juxtaposition of old images and new stories gives Smith’s work a sense of timelessness.
The book was featured as a News & Notes item in Kolaj #20.
We wrote:
Smith tells true stories, mostly from her childhood in Germany. She said, “I don’t remember what started the process, but after making three collages that included snippets from my life story, I was convinced I had to make a book. I had no idea what I was in for. I’d never made a book, much less wanted to compile a memoir of sorts. Creating this work was fun and frustrating and difficult and rewarding, though in different proportions at different times.” Among the widespread recognition it received was the bronze IPPY in essay/creative non-fiction at the 2009 Independent Publisher Book Awards.
