Collage is one of the defining subjects in Modern Art. It is as important and popular today as it has ever been. This definitive survey of collage and 3-D sculpture (made from bits and pieces stuck and nailed together) spans the whole period from about 1600 to the present day. It overturns long-held accepted views of when the art of Collage began and is packed with fascinating historical images as well as revealing some astonishing, never-previously- published images, such as a huge screen of 400 engravings by Charles Dickens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each page of this book is filled with fascination. The lavish illustrations include images of items such as books with fold-out flaps, Victorian collage, Valentine and greeting cards, double exposure photographs, album covers such as Sgt Peppers<\/em>, the Hungry Caterpillar<\/em>, many curiosities and items from Cubism, Dada, Surrealism, Pop, 70’s counterculture, video and computerized collage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the authors:<\/em>
Patrick Elliott is Senior Curator at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh. He has written extensively on modern and contemporary art. Recent publications include Another World: Dal\u00ed, Magritte, Mir\u00f3 and the Surrealists<\/em> (2010), Tony Cragg<\/em> (2011), The Two Roberts: Robert Colquhoun and Robert MacBryde<\/em> (2014), The Amazing World of M.C. Escher<\/em> (2015), Joan Eardley: A Sense of Place<\/em> (2016) and True to Life<\/em> (2017).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Freya Gowrley is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh’s Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yuval Etgar is the Director of Research and Exhibitions at Luxembourg & Dayan, London, and a Doctoral candidate at the Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
