Sonoma, California, USA

Born and raised in South Dakota, Shay lives and works in Sonoma, California, with his wife, the sculptor Karen Shay. He describes himself as “the child of albino prairie wolves who nurtured his instinct to make fine art and taught him how to differentiate between the banal and evil, and the beautiful and righteous.”

“Using mannequins, rather than images of real people, helps traditional human editorial content slip away and be replaced by a provocative strangeness with its own meaning.”

Shay graduated from Arizona State University in architecture. He discovered collage through the wonderful artwork of the French architect, Le Corbusier. He’s the author of a book on San Francisco Bay architecture published by Chronicle Books and numerous newspaper articles on art and architecture. Among these endeavours, collage remains far and away his favourite art form. See more in the Kolaj Magazine Artist Directory or at www.jamesshay.com.
