Solange Gautier is a French artist and illustrator whose work can regularly be seen in the French newspaper Le Monde Diplomatique, on book covers and in other publications such as Figaro and Virgule. She also has a distinct personal collage practice marked with influences from ancient engravings and surrealism. Moreover, her practice follows uncommon path that underlies her process.

Kolaj editor Benoit Depelteau profiled Gautier in Issue 9. Here is an excerpt:

Just as most collage artists do, she enjoys the constant quest for images to use in her work. When she finds a gem that is still under copyright, she recreates the scene and reshoots it. What was, at first, a technical need soon became an important aspect of Gautier’s work. Her grainy photographs offer a visual consistency and, when coupled with fragments from old engravings, give a strong visual coherence to her work.
