Alexis Lavoie was born in 1980 in Montreal, where he continues to live and work. He has a BA in visual art and media from the University of Quebec at Montreal. In 2010, he won first prize in the 12th Annual RBC Canadian Painting Competition. He is represented by Galerie Simon Blais in Montreal.

Ariane Fairlie spoke with Lavoie about his work and wrote about in an Artist Portfolio in Issue 11 of Kolaj Magazine.

“This absence of definite spatial reference points reinforces possible analogies between painted elements and accentuates their respective symbolic charges,” said Lavoie. “Those hazy spaces, made up of shadows and lights, harbour scattered elements that seem to fall, float and dwell in those compositions without giving out any specific clues about their relationships, their own nature or that of the areas they occupy.” Lavoie is skilled at painting trompe l’oeil images that seem like collage. He uses found images and composes his paintings so that the images exist in this unreal space that could not belong to our world.
