Beyond Pop Art: Tom Wesselman

American artist and songwriter Tom Wesselmann (1931-2004) is considered, with artists such as Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, as one of definers of Pop art. His early work from the 1950s included collage, and then moved to abstract and figurative painting. For lovers of collage, “Tom Wesselmann: Beyond Pop Art” includes abstract collages of found paper, many of which have not been exhibited before, as well as monumental sculptures composed of objects, grouped together to form a portrait. This is an historic opportunity to see Wesselmann’s complete body of work and the only opportunity to see it in Canada. In spring 2013, the show moves to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond.
