Collage at the New York Art Fairs

Motel by Casey Ruble

In March 2014, Kolaj contributor Claudia Eve Beauchesne went to the New York art fairs. She visited VOLTA NY, The Armory Show, and the Independent Art Fair and brought us back a report on the fairs’ collage offerings.

In Issue Eight, Beauchesne reports on work by Casey Ruble at Foley Gallery (VOLTA NY), Marianne Vitale at Zach Feuer (The Armory Show), and John Stezaker at The Approach (Independent Art Fair).

The objects tried hard to outdo each other – to be bolder, prettier or just plain weirder in order to attract collectors looking for “a bigger Blah Blah Blah” (literally and figuratively) to complement the one that’s already hanging in their living room. Among this glut of derivative paintings, conceptual paperwork and everyday objects purposefully strewn across the floor, collage, with its more modest dimensions and strong ties to craft, got lost, somewhat.
