Metaphors and New Connections

FROM KOLAJ 21

John Washington’s Artist Portfolio

Using his knowledge as a graphic designer, John Washington makes digital collage using Procreate on a 12.7-inch iPad. Unlike many of his digital compatriots who create seamless, blended imagery, Washington borrows heavily from the look and feel of analog collage. Washington, a former police officer, has had an interesting life and brings his experiences to his collage work. A portfolio of Washington’s appears in Kolaj #21.

Kolaj Magazine features portfolios of contemporary artists in each issue alongside critical commentary as a means of developing a deeper understanding of collage as both a medium and a genre.

My work explores several themes such as concepts of time, memory, secret behaviour and the overall unpredictability of life. I enjoy finding metaphors and new connections from seemingly disparate images and my collages are imbued with personal meaning, drawn particularly from my younger years.

John Washington lives and works from his home studio in the Greater Manchester area of the United Kingdom. He spent 20 years as a police officer before embarking on a career as a designer and educator. He has a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design (1st class), a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education and a Masters Degree in Graphic Design (Distinction). His collages have been presented a several academic conferences, as well as in shows in North America. Learn more at his Kolaj Magazine Artist Directory page or at www.johnwashington.co.uk.
