Christy Mitchell’s collaged cigarette boxes hint at toxic masculinity

Christy Mitchell collaged late 1940s Fortune and early 1970s Popular Science magazines onto empty Parliament Lights cigarette packs as part of a conceptual exhibition about the men she dated who ghosted her.

“Smoking for me was this cool girl aesthetic, the Parisian artist romantically awaiting her lover. I enjoy playing with the cigarette box shape and pairing it with paper of a certain print quality and colour that instantly feels nostalgic,” said Mitchell.

Gallerist and curator Christy J. Mitchell operates The S.P.A.C.E. Gallery in Burlington, Vermont’s South End Arts District. She holds a degree in Fine Arts from the Savannah College of Art & Design, with studies in metals and jewelry design.
