Tanya St-Pierre: Collage Series

Quebec artist Tanya St-Pierre’s “Collage Series”, at The Rooms in St. John’s, is the result of two weeks of intensive research in the Newfoundland & Labrador Provincial Archives Division in August 2014. St-Pierre carefully looked over hundreds of archival documents and selected the primary material for the collages, which interpret the work of Newfoundland and Labrador women during the First and Second World Wars. The Rooms’ press materials state, “By cutting out fragments of history from archival sources, and blending the two time periods, [St-Pierre’s] collages operate like a metaphor for the disruption that occurs during wartime, and the lives torn in the context of these moments of strong cultural tension and social transition.” Tanya St-Pierre, originally from Gatineau, Quebec, lives and works in Sherbrooke, Quebec. She holds a BFA from the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivières and has shown work and attended artist residencies in Quebec, Ontario, the U.S., and Mexico. The “Collage Series” runs through 13 September 2015.
