On Monday, 27 July 2026, 7-9PM EDT, we would like to invite any Montreal Collage Artist to join us for an evening of community and collage making. The event is hosted by Kolaj Institute Director Ric Kasini Kadour, who will speak briefly about the Place as Archive project, upcoming activities and exhibition opportunities at Kolaj Institute. The mission of Kolaj Institute is to support artists, curators, and writers who seek to study, document, & disseminate ideas that deepen our understanding of collage as a medium, a genre, a community, and a 21st century movement. We operate a number of initiatives meant to bring together community, investigate critical issues, and raise the standing of collage in the art world. Our philosophy is that if we bring artists together, explore ideas and concepts, share knowledge, we can stretch and develop as artists. When we bring that knowledge and skill into our communities, we raise the standing of collage and contribute to the civic discourse. Kolaj Institute is decentralized and works in partnership with a number of art venues and other organizations to manifest its programs. Since 2012, we have published a magazine from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. In 2025, we presented COLLAGE::BOOKS, a multi-day event about collage, community, and publishing as part of VOLUME 8 MTL, Montreal’s annual conference and fair devoted to art publishing and artists’ books.
In Summer 2026, we will begin to explore Montreal as part of Kolaj Institute’s Place as Archive project, an investigation of how artists incorporate a sense of place into their collage art as a way of drawing out deeper, more complex stories. Place as Archive takes as its premise that the landscape can be viewed as a sort of archive from which artists can draw, not unlike a material archive maintained in an institutional collection. When artists approach a place as an archive, they draw out a deeper, more complex understanding of that place that enriches our understanding of our communities, helps us be better citizens, and empowers us to take better care of our neighbors. Place as Archive intersects with other Kolaj Institute Projects around photography, folklore, trash as material, street art, and history. With a current focus on New Orleans, Montreal, and Scotland, the project manifests as residencies, articles, exhibitions, and publications.
Kolaj Institute will convene “Montreal: City as Archive Artist Lab” on Tuesday, 28 July to Sunday, 2 August 2026 at Atelier Galerie 2112 in Montreal. Eight artists from across Canada and the United States will gather to make artwork; learn about the city of Montreal, its people, and its history; and discuss how art can capture, share, reflect, comment, and otherwise engage with a sense of place.
