COLLAGE ON VIEW

As The Moon Sees It

at the Museum of Model Art in Sanquhar, Scotland, United Kingdom
Opening Reception: 21 December 2019, 6PM-9PM

This is the third collaborative exhibition of Amy Marletta and Denise Zygadlo, triggered originally by Marletta’s interest in the work of Hannah Höch. Hannah Höch was the only female member of the Dada group in Berlin in the 1920s, reacting to the horrors of war and making provocative photomontage works, poetry and performance exploring the Weimar Era perceptions of gender and ethnic differences. The word Dada implies the nonsensical and this is evident in the crazy juxtapositions, distortions and bizarre combinations of the images in the artwork the group produced.

Kurt Schwitters was also a member of the Dada group and a close friend of Hannah Höch. He used the term Merz for his collages of found objects, sculptures, sound poems and installations. 2019 is the 100th anniversary of Hannah Höch’s first exhibition, “Cut with the Kitchen Knife”, so it is fitting that Marletta and Zygadlo’s show is taking place at the Museum of Model Art in association with MERZ Gallery in Sanquhar.

In line with the ideas behind Dada, the works shown here play with strange combinations and the element of surprise in two very different ways of working.

As part of this exhibition, the artists have also been working on an installation for the Hannah Höch art-house, situated behind the Museum of Model Art in the sculpture garden. The interior of the art-house has been transformed using the work of Hannah Höch as inspiration and will be available in the Spring to hire for a night’s stop-over and immersion into her world.

There will be an artist reception on 21 December 2019 at 6PM and on Boxing Day from 2PM to 4PM when Amy Marletta, David Rushton, Dougie Sharpe and Denise Zygadlo show their work in progress on The Hannah Höch Art-House.

Amy Marletta is a graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (Dundee), she completed her degree (Fine Art) in 2002 before going on to complete her Masters of Fine Art at Glasgow School of Art in 2010. Originally spanning video and performance Marletta’s practice has always had collage at its core but more recently she has focused on working primarily with paper and print.

Cloth and the body have been the main elements of Denise Zygadlo’s work, through drawing, print and collage. She works with live photocopies as a way to explore our relationship with cloth and our perceptions of gender, beauty and classical art forms. Collage is the perfect vehicle for this and allows plenty of room for humor. Having worked in black and white on large scale canvas pieces, Zygadlo is currently working on a smaller scale and enjoying the glory of colour.
