In its most basic form, collage is created by cutting and pasting paper to a backing. Because collage allows for the inclusion of disparate materials, the medium creates remarkable confrontations in one piece. Past and present, found and forged, delicate and sturdy—the wide variety of source material artists employ when creating collage and assemblage (one artwork made from a grouping of unrelated objects) creates unexpected dialogues between media and style.

“Drawing with Scissors: Collage from the Collection” augments “Exploring Jess: Beat Generation Visionary” by presenting collages by artists who worked on both sides of the Atlantic from the turn of the 20th century to the present. This exhibition is formed exclusively from the Museum’s holdings of collaged works, which are on display together for the first time. At its best, collage is a surprise meeting of materials that allows artists to expand their vocabulary.
