“Intersections: Sean Flood & Duncan Johnson”
19-25 August 2016

Kobalt Gallery’s “Intersections” presents the work of salvage wood assemblage artist Duncan Johnson (who was interviewed in Kolaj #5) and urban-scape painter Sean Flood. The artists are featured together in an exhibition in which colour, movement, and structure align in an anthology of multi-layered works sprung from Flood’s palette and Johnson’s cache of reclaimed wood.

From the discarded remnants of fallen wooden structures come the exacting constructs of Vermont-based artist Duncan Johnson’s imagination and impeccable craftsmanship, each piece embedded with the history of its materials. The interplay of vertical and horizontal planes, weathered and worn painted surfaces, line and form constitute the unfathomable matrix of Johnson’s pieces, some with the complexity of a circuit board or urban site plan, and others with a more minimalist approach.

Through the power of suggestion, Boston-based artist Sean Flood brings the sites, sounds and electricity of city life to the surface of his canvases. City cabs rush toward a traffic light and figures dash from curb to curb dissolving into ambiguous strokes of yellow and an entire spectrum of muted color when viewed up close. From a distance, Flood’s ability to make each mark and painted line work together with the next to imply a moment in motion becomes apparent, just as his staggering sense of perspective leads us down block after city block until buildings rise beyond the canvas edge and vanish into the horizon.

“Intersections” illustrates the similarities Flood and Johnson share despite their divergent mediums, both
approaching their work with the mindset of an architect who builds from the inside out, yet ever reliant on the eye and sensibility of a painter to guide them through their process to each piece’s completion.
