Fall of Freedom: Rise of Resistance
at The Drawing Room in San Francisco, California, USA
22 November 2025-11 January 2026
Fall of Freedom is an urgent grassroots call to the arts community to unite in defiance of authoritarian forces sweeping the nation. In response to this invitation, artists Michelle Echenique, Rachel Leibman, Martin Linder and Priscilla Otani partnered with the Drawing Room to organize an exhibit that creatively reimagines the American flag.

Throughout history there have been many illustrious artists who have used the American flag as social commentary. By joining them in reinterpreting this powerful symbol of patriotism, we are declaring our profound opposition to the alarming and increasing attacks on our democracy. Our hope is to create a space for critical engagement and thoughtful conversation around what it means to be American. Art matters. Artists are a threat to autocracy. Let rise the resistance.
Initiated by a group of artists, writers, and cultural workers–including Lynn Nottage, Dread Scott, Cassils, Laura Raicovich, Hari Kunzru and Robert Longo, among many others–Fall of Freedom is an urgent call to the arts community to unite in defiance of authoritarian forces sweeping the nation. They believe that democracy is under assault: dissent is being criminalized, institutions are being defunded and pressured, and free expression is increasingly threatened. Through a coordinated wave of creative resistance, Fall of Freedom seeks to celebrate and assert the cultures, and artistic voices that form the backbone of a free society.
