Sarah Winkler: “Formations: The Constructed Landscape”
3 March-2 April 2016

British-born Sarah Winkler’s work lies “at the boundaries of realism and abstraction, modernism and minimalism.” The imagery in the rich and varied landscapes, constructed through her layered approach,is inspired by mountainous Colorado surroundings and Western Deserts, but ultimately formed by her signature aesthetic. Winkler says of her approach: “My layered and sectional painting process mimics the addition and subtraction of geological textures, over time, in landscape formation. Sketches and ideas are hashed out in drawings and torn paper collages using my own fabricated papers and imagery. I build up the larger paintings in sections and treat each area to a different “erosion” technique. By applying paint in this way, I am creating a history of gestures and actions that form into naturalistic abstracted landscapes with painted geological textures.”

Sarah Winkler works from her home and studio in the Rocky Mountains, where the surrounding landscape is a constant inspiration for her work. Her work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions across the United States, as well as being included in multiple public and private collections. Most recently she has been interviewed by Fresh Paint, Alpine Modern, and Mountain Express.
