Jim Sanders Collage Installation at Iconic London Tattoo Shop

British collage artist Jim Sanders was commissioned to create an installation to commemorate the final year of London’s iconic tattoo shop, Into You Tattoo.

After opening the shop in London’s Clerkenwell neighbourhood in 1993, Alex Binnie, legendary tattooist and founder of Into You Tattoo will close its doors for the final time in 2016. To mark its last year, he commissioned Sanders to create an all-encompassing art installation that transforms the space and acts as a memorial to the last 23 years.

Sanders’ work resides alongside Primitive, Outsider or Non-Western Art and is sensitive to religious traditions, often containing ritual connotations, while striving to make sense of human interactions and the sources and reasons for existence.

Sanders said, “A selection of images have been salvaged from old books, newspapers, magazines and flyers, which I have collected over many years; specifically imagery dealing with symbolism, astrology, mythology, sex and death that is also commonly shared by the world of tattooing.” The installation is placed along with imagery from the tattoo artists at Into You Tattoo.

Jim Sanders is represented by Espace Robert Poulin in Montreal. His work was part of “Mixed Grill III” at the gallery, 20 June-8 August 2015. Sanders’ work, Equating the New with the Good, was featured in a review of the show in Kolaj #13. Read a preview of the article HERE.
