Magos de la Tierra

“Magos de la Tierra” brings together sculptures, assemblages, paintings, and wood carvings by Orlando Estrada and Jacoub Reyes that examine the generational impacts of migration, cultural disintegration, and colonialism. Drawing upon their Puerto Rican heritage, the artists explore diasporic consciousness, otherness, and the ways land, art, memory, and identity intertwine. The exhibition is curated by David Rios Ferreira.

The exhibition’s title responds to “Magiciens de la Terre”, the landmark 1989 exhibition at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris that challenged Eurocentric frameworks while generating ongoing debate about cultural representation. Estrada and Reyes reimagine its ideas through materially layered works that uncover patterns within buried histories. Estrada’s sculptures embody transformation, conjuring terrains shaped by the forces of cultural evolution, while Reyes uses printmaking, carved wood, and fabric to consider memory, hybridity, and the natural world.
