“Materia Orgánica”: Steve Tierney & Malo Farfán

When the creative process flows in an organic way, the development of ideas comes naturally and is less forced, and ultimately, the entire practice of making art opens up to allow things which could not have been predicted or planned to occur instinctively.

When two artists from different cultures share a common way of thinking and a friendship is created, the ability to collaborate across different mediums can happen organically. In doing so, new ideas and ways of thinking about process and the approach to art making can emerge.

Materia Orgánica is an example of the connection between two friends and artists, Malo Farfán (Mexico) and Steve Tierney (Australia), and two very different forms of art making.

For this exhibition, Tierney created collages on large sheets of coloured card and then handed the pieces over to Malo Farfán so that he could draw on top of them, adding his own illustrative style. The resulting graphic images are an organic mix of art techniques and an exciting explosion of colour, form, texture and new ideas.
