Louis St. Lewis: ODE to LOU

A retrospective exhibition by the late artist Louis St. Lewis, “ODE to LOU” brings together work by a shape-shifter and provocateur whose practice moved fluidly between painting, églomisé, assemblage, and mixed media. A native of North Carolina who lived most of his life in Chapel Hill, St. Lewis maintained a deep connection to New Orleans through the many friends and artists who made the city a home away from home. His work was shown in New Orleans over the years, beginning with Margarite Oestreicher Gallery on Julia Street in the early 2000s and ending with his final show in 2017 at Martine Chaisson Gallery.

Influenced by Warhol and the Pop Art movement, St. Lewis created bold, lush, and theatrical works that blur the lines between fashion, fine art, religious iconography, and Southern Gothic sensibility. His work is in the collections of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Ackland Art Museum at the University of North Carolina, the Morris Museum of Art, and others. He also completed large-scale commissions for The Country Club in Bywater and for Live Nation Entertainment venues across the country.
