Jean Martin (Raven): “Braconnier urbain” (Urban Poacher)

Jean Martin’s solo show of over 30 works is his first at Galerie du Théâtre-Magog, but his work has been seen there in group exhibitions. Active for over 20 years, Jean Martin explores sculpture and composition with collages made of found, torn posters. These posters are often in thick layers and present the history and sociology of our cities. After collecting the posters, Jean Martin cuts and glues them together. He reconstructs, superimposes, reframes, tags and smooths them out on different platforms, constantly searching for a way to dialogue with the images to create new narratives. He interlaces socio-political and cultural symbols to create an authentic collective memory of our society. Despite the illegibility of some symbols, the artist seeks to establish a correspondence between letters and words. Under the layers of posters, the underlying images impose themselves like old, confused souvenirs.

Jean Martin, a.k.a. Raven, was born in 1951 in Casablanca, Morocco. After receiving a BFA from Concordia University in Montreal and continuing studies at the Institute des Beaux-Arts Villa Maria, Martin interned at Atelier GRAFF. Recipient of the Duchamp-Villon Prize in 1988, Jean Martin has continued to remain active, with over 50 group and 12 solo exhibitions at such art venues as the Maison de la culture Notre-Dame-de-Grâce and Maison de la culture Côte-des-Neiges in Montreal. His works can be found in public and private collections across Canada.
