Like motherhood itself, the work is continually remixed and rebuilt. Bodies are multiplied and erased through extensive layering, fragmentation, and re-photography. Figures and forms combine, break, grow, shrink, and reassemble. Blank plaster fragments, used as sculptural elements throughout the exhibition, function as lacunae—unfilled gaps or intervals—that become the unwritten spaces in which the mother’s identity can be rewritten. Woods’ hybrid approach to image-making in lacuna illuminates the pliancy of maternal experience, showcasing how maternal perspective can expand the discourse around identity and gender in contemporary art.

(text adapted from material provided by the gallery)

INFORMATION

Jack Fischer Gallery
1275 Minnesota Street
San Francisco, California 94107 USA
(415) 725-0308

Hours:
Thursday-Saturday, 11:30AM-5:30PM
Tuesday-Wednesday, call or email for an appointment

MAP | WEBSITE | FACEBOOK

COLLAGE ON VIEW Vanessa Woods: lacuna at Jack Fischer Gallery in San Francisco, California, USA22 June-27 July 2024 “lacuna” is Vanessa Woods’ first exhibition at Jack Fischer Gallery to feature 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional works including photographs, collages, casts, and plaster…

Read more →

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[11

post-15532","post","type-post","status-publish","format-gallery","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-collage-exhibitions","post_format-post-format-gallery
COLLAGE ON VIEW "Somewhere Between Here and There": Vanessa Woods at Jack Fischer Gallery in San Francisco 13 January-24 February 2018 Vanessa Woods' solo exhibition, "Somewhere Between Here and There" presents a new body of work created from the archive of 1940s-60s paper ephemera and objects that Woods recently inherited…
https://i0.wp.com/kolajmagazine.com/content/wp-content/uploads/vanessa-woods-obstacles-web.jpg?resize=350%2C200
https://i0.wp.com/kolajmagazine.com/content/wp-content/uploads/vanessa-woods-obstacles-web.jpg?resize=350%2C200 1x, https://i0.wp.com/kolajmagazine.com/content/wp-content/uploads/vanessa-woods-obstacles-web.jpg?resize=525%2C300 1.5x, https://i0.wp.com/kolajmagazine.com/content/wp-content/uploads/vanessa-woods-obstacles-web.jpg?resize=700%2C400 2x
Form Study 12 by Vanessa Woods12"x9"; collage; 2020.
