Courtesy of the artists<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>COLLAGE ON VIEW<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Edwards + Johann: Mutability\u2014propositions to an unknown universe<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">at the Christchurch Art Gallery in Christchurch, New Zealand<br>14 September 2024-9 February 2025<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Transformation is at the heart of &#8220;Mutability&#8211;propositions to an unknown universe&#8221;. It features the work of Victoria Edwards and Ina Johann, \u014ctautahi Christchurch-based artists who have collaborated as &#8220;Edwards + Johann&#8221; since 2007.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Edwards + Johann use a range of different materials and processes&#8211;photography, drawing, collage, sculpture and more&#8211;often layering these over each other so that their works evolve through multiple states. &#8220;Edwards + Johann: Mutabilities\u2014propositions to an unknown universe&#8221; combines a selection of works from the last five years with new sculptures&#8211;some still in a state of &#8220;becoming&#8221;&#8211;to deliver an intriguing and transporting art experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Artistic residencies, in New Zealand, Scotland, France and Switzerland, have been a key part of Edwards + Johann\u2019s practice, providing an opportunity to absorb the atmosphere and history of unfamiliar locations and then use this as a catalyst for artmaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/kolajmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/edwards-johann-Geomorphic-Conversation-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15976\" srcset=\"http:\/\/kolajmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/edwards-johann-Geomorphic-Conversation-2.jpg 1000w, http:\/\/kolajmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/edwards-johann-Geomorphic-Conversation-2-600x600.jpg 600w, http:\/\/kolajmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/edwards-johann-Geomorphic-Conversation-2-700x700.jpg 700w, http:\/\/kolajmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/edwards-johann-Geomorphic-Conversation-2-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/kolajmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/edwards-johann-Geomorphic-Conversation-2-768x768.jpg 768w, http:\/\/kolajmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/edwards-johann-Geomorphic-Conversation-2-260x260.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Geomorphic Conversation #2<\/em> by Edwards + Johann <br>partially hand-colored photograph; 2020-2023. Courtesy of the artists<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Their new exhibition is shaped by their responses to two very different places&#8211;\u014ctautahi Christchurch and Whakaari White Island, located near Whakat\u0101ne on the east coast of the North Island. The pair visited Whakaari twice in 2018 as part of the Volcanic Arts Residency and were immediately struck by its dramatic and ever-changing landscape.
