\u201cIt Happened One Night\u201d is a show of paintings and mixed media artwork by Ronnie Spiewak.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ms. Spiewak\u2019s inspired collage garden has grown wild and entangled, with strange organic forms.\u00a0 Paper leaves and words swirl and settle in new and surprising patterns. Lines and shapes dance to their own energetic rhythms.<\/p>\n

Spiewak says: “I\u2019m a juggler of fragments and I\u2019ve always been interested in setting and keeping things in motion.\u00a0 I\u2019m interested in creating a complete image by using disparate pieces to make the whole.\u00a0 It\u2019s a selective process about incorporating, juxtaposing and eliminating. It\u2019s about finding and losing. It\u2019s a method of working that echoes the ways I make choices in my daily living.<\/p>\n

“Collage has always been a satisfying vehicle for expressing ideas and emotion.\u00a0 The scissors and the exacto blade are my paintbrushes.\u00a0 They help create line and shape quickly and crisply.\u00a0 Paper has a 3-dimentional quality that I\u2019m constantly exploring. There is a language of paper. Glossy, saturated magazine paper sings.\u00a0 The color, plainness and usefulness\u00a0 of\u00a0 brown paper offers\u00a0 an earthy quality.<\/p>\n

“I am also drawn to the calligraphy of foreign languages, with it\u2019s beautiful array of symbols and marks.\u00a0 Hebrew newsprint, evident in many of my pieces, has become a way to symbolize dialogue, culture and timelessness.\u00a0 It\u2019s also a way to integrate my personal heritage into the work, reflecting on a culture of an ancient and simultaneously modern land.<\/p>\n

The blend of language becomes a metaphor for the eyes and of the world.<\/p>\n

My recent work combines collage with paint, and often just paint.\u00a0 The work is inspired by nature, travel, words and people.\u00a0 My current work is a departure from the past in which I used appropriated imagery from cartoons, comics, and pop-culture.”<\/p>\n

The artist holds a BFA from the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C. She is an avid gardener. Spiewak works at the Passageways Studio in Riverdale, Maryland.<\/p>\n
