Staples works with found images and photography through collage and printmaking. The work for which he won the prize “revolved around real estate, printmaking, failure and the unknown”. The winning work was not collage, but Staples continues to work in collage. The CASV Emerging Artist’s Prize was established in 2011 to encourage and support artists within the first five years of their careers. It is the only prize of its kind in Vancouver selected through an open competition. Jury members Grant Arnold, Vanessa Kwan, Sarah Macaulay, Kimberly Phillips, and Reid Shier selected Staples’ work from a field of 5 finalists, who were chosen from a field of 89 entries. Staples was awarded $3000 and his work was part of the finalists’ exhibition at Access Gallery in Vancouver in May 2014.

To see more of Joseph Staples’ work, including his collage work, visit his website: HERE

This News and Notes item originally appeared in Issue Nine.
