The show consists of four distinct series of works, organized in three intimate gallery spaces, that function collectively and in which contrasting disparate images work as if in chain reaction, like sentences and paragraphs in a larger story. The work speaks to Schmidt’s penchant for eliminating particularization and to the expression of the synthesis of sound and light vibration, a blurring of time and memory and to her interest in shape shifting and transfiguration. Schmidt’s work is grounded by her rural environs and yet entangled with dark humour and social commentary.

For over two decades, Erika Lawlor Schmidt’s work as visual and performance artist has been guided by her study into the similarities between Eastern mysticism and quantum theory, both of which share a view that abolishes the notion of the universe as made up of fundamentally separated objects. This view understands our world as an interconnected web of physical and mental relations whose parts are defined through the connections to the whole…and are utterly interdependent.

(adapted from the artist’s press materials)

INFORMATION

Castleton Downtown Gallery
Center Street Alley
Rutland, Vermont 05701 USA
Information: email Sarah Karczmarczyk

Hours:
Wednesday-Saturday, 11AM-6PM

MAP | WEBSITE | FACEBOOK

Image:
La vie en Rose…or…Rose over the ocean (for Rose)
by Erika Lawlor Schmidt
12″x16″
collage
2015
Courtesy of the artist

6 May-6 June 2015 Artist reception: Friday, 15 May, 6PM Erika Lawlor Schmidt: “blame it on my youth” The show “blame it on my youth” features recent collage, construction and monotypes by Vermont artist Erika Lawlor Schmidt.
